Grand Alps and Route Napoleon Motorcycle Tour

La Route des Grandes Alps: This mountain highway weaves its way south for 684 kilometres from the shores of Lake Geneva to the Mediterranean Coast.  The route leads over 16 alpine passes, 6 of which are over 2000m high.  It starts in the region of the Haute Savoie and travels the mountains of Chablais, Vanoise, Queyras, Ubaye and Mercantour crossing into the Alpes Maritimes.  La Route finally descends to the coast, the splendors of the Cote d’Azur, and the start of yet another legendary motorcycle route.

Route Napoleon: First opened in 1932 and follows the route taken by Napoleon Bonaparte in 1815 on his march from Golfe-Juan to Grenoble.  Route Napoleon takes you on a ride through French history, but it also leads you through a constantly varying landscape of limestone crags, hidden canyons and mighty mountain ranges.

Grand Alps and Route Napoleon Motorcycle Tour Itinerary

Duration: 8 Days/7 Nights

Fully Guided Tour – Difficult

Day 1

Overnight from Calais to Nancy (approx 290 miles)

The group will assemble outside the EuroTunnel Terminal main building in Folkstone.  You will be met by Face (Michael Prentice), your tour guide, and given a quick briefing before boarding the train.

Although the day will start out on some motorways don’t be lulled into a false sense of security, its just making up time on our way to the twisty fun stuff.  Using the motorway we are able to quickly head through the Nord-pas-de-Calais and Picardie Regions of France into the Champagne Ardennes and the champagne capital of the world, Reims.  A wee stop for some lunch before heading off to the old Grand Prix Circuit at Gueux, a great photo opportunity.  Following lunch we then make our way through the Champagne Vineyards that make up the Parc Naturel Regional de La Montage de Reims.  On from here its fun, twisty Route National Road all the way down, across the Bourgegne into Dijon and our hotel for the first night.

Day 2

Dijon – Megeye (approx. 265 miles – 6 hrs)

Rise and shine, today we make our way south through the Rhone-Alps Region with its fast sweeping bends all the way to Geneva and the town of Thonon-Les Bains, which is the official starting point for La Route des Grandes Alpes.  Its a ride of around 190km to the Bourg-Saint-Maurice starting with a series of smaller cols to get you and your bike warmed up for further big ones.

The Col de La Colombiere (1613m), the first major pass on La Route, is a stunning ride as you climb past the tree line and striking rock formations to the summit.  Onward through the ski resort of Le Bossonnet to Megeve for our overnight stop.

Day 3

Megeve – Guilestre (approx. 170 miles – 6hrs)

We start the day on the fabulous Cormet Roselend Pass (1968m).  This climbs through wooded slopes and past the tranquil waters of the Lac de Roselend. This, along with the dazzling views of the mighty glaciers, provides a superb backdrop as the road rises above the lake and around the cliffs towards the summit.

Next we have the immense Col de I’lseran (2770m).  When it opened in 1937 it was the highest road pass in Europe and is still considered one of the major must ride passes in the alps. Continuing on we climb the Col du Galibier (2645m), a favourite with motorcyclists and a lung bursting ride on the tour de France.  As you descend the Galibier you are at the foot of the Col du Lautaret (2057m) which was carved from a glacier.

Riding into the mountain town of Briancon at 1326m – one of the highest towns in Europe.  Once out of Brianon its time to tackle the forbidding Col d’ Izoard with its almost lunar landscape, then descend into the wild and beautiful Guil Gorge towards the town of Guillestre and finally our home for the night.

Day 4

Guilestre – Menton (approx. 175 miles, 7.5hrs)

Its straight up the Col de Vars (2111m) Col de la Cayolle (2327m) and the Col de la Couillole (1678m).

Moving on, we leave the forest and mountains behind on the Col de Turin, (1607m) its tight hairpins being a famous feature on the Monte Carlo rally.  Via the lovely town of Sospel down to Menton on the coast and there you can pull off your boots and dip your feet in the warm waters of the Med!

Day 5

Day of Rest/Ride out to Monte Carlo and Nice

Day 6

Menton – Grenoble (240miles, 7.45hrs)

Route Napoleon is considered by many as one of the best biking roads in Europe, the tarmac is billiard table smooth and the corners a sublime combination of seriously fast sweepers and challenging mountain hairpins.  Just over 300km long, it is guaranteed that you will be grinning from ear to ear the whole way as this famous road winds through some of Frances most spectacular scenery.  Ride the magnificent Gorges du Verdon, Europe’s largest canyon – this route has it all!

Day 7 –

Grenoble – Saint Diziea (320miles, 8hrs)

Today we start to head towards home, leaving Grenoble we head into Parc National Regional de Chartreuse tracing the banks of the Isere, up to Geneva and through the fantastic forest of the Haut-Jura National Parc.  Continuing up past Dijon and into the Champagne Region we reach our evening stop.

Day 8 –

Saint Dizier – Calais (255miles, 4.5hrs)

Sadly, our last day and its cross country to Epernay for a coffee stop then a blast through the Champagne Vineyards which make up the Montagne de Reims Natural Parc before riding along the old Grand Prix Circuit at Gueux near Reims.  Lastly, A26 and a quick blast to Calais for an early afternoon crossing and our final goodbyes.
