After a short break we will head for the twisty road of the Ardennes region on our way to our final destination, Nancy. We will be close to the Belgium border and passing through the Ardennes region which is sure to captivate.
Day 2 – Nancy – Freiburg (approx. 260 miles)
After breakfast we will head via the twisty roads of the Northern Vosges Mountains to the Palatinate Forest. Crossing the Rhine we find ourselves on some great biking roads; the Black Forest. Baden Baden, a spa town is on our way to the B500. This road truly delivers it all. Unblemished tarmac, technical twists and turns, fast sweeping bends and great views across the Black Forest. We will see the world’s largest cuckoo clock in Schonach and ride by Lake Titisee and Schluchsee before finding our way to our hotel in Freiburg where we will stop for two nights.
Day 3 – Freiburg ride out (approx. 200 miles)
After our first night in Freiburg we head out and take in Lake Titisee then Lake Schluchsee on the B500 once again and head south all the way to Koblenz on the banks of the Rhine River. Lunch at Rheinfalls. Feldberg after lunch. At 1493 metres high, Feldburg is the highest mountain in Germany outside the Alps. We take this in before heading back to our hotel in a picturesque old quarter of Freiburg. The area includes a Cathedral, quaint historic squares and many a restaurant or café to choose from.
Day 4 – Freiburg to the Vosges Mountains (approx. 230 miles)
Heading across the Rhine and into France we find the twisty roads of the Vosges Mountains. Following Route des Crete (the Road of the Peaks) we will pass the peaks of Le Hohneck and Le Grand Ballon, reaching a height of 1424 metres for some stunning panoramic vistas. Stopping for some lunch we will then continue through the Vosges, Col du Wettstein, Col des Basgenelles, Col de Saint Marie, Col de Steige and Col du Donon all on the agenda for the afternoon. You could ride around the Vosges Mountains for weeks and still not find all the hidden treasures they offer. Definitely one of France’s best kept secrets.
Day 5 – Alsace Lorraine to Calais (approx. 335 miles)
We start this day heading west into the Champagne capital of the world, rolling hills full of vineyards as far as the eye can see. Lunch is taken on the Avenue de Champagne overlooking Moet de Chandon House and Museum. After lunch we head to the Circuit du Reims – Gueux. This is the old GP Circuit and is a great photo op. We then hop onto the A26 to Calais in time for our late afternoon train to GB.
